The Sculpture Place

The Sculpture Place project will provide a significant physical and virtual resource for artists working in 3D in Cornwall, the South West and the UK.  The project has been growing for several years, initially as an artist-led network of practitioners, and the group leading it made significant progress, undertaking a detailed feasibility study and producing a full business plan for a possible capital scheme.

During its development the project received a lot of encouragement and some financial support from Kerrier District Council’s regeneration team and this contributed to the Sculpture Place being included as a key element in the Kerrier-led Heartlands scheme which was awarded over £22 million from the Lottery’s Living Landmarks programme at the end of 2007, following a very hectic development and appraisal process.

The Sculpture Place steering group agreed that the project should become part of ACT’s work since it needed a legal ‘home’ – the alternative was to set it up as an independent legal entity – and since the project is such a good fit with our other workspace cluster in Redruth.

The project has five main objectives:

  1. Workspace – to provide workspaces and facilities – at the core of this is a large flexible space that can be subdivided on a temporary basis to allow artists to rent parts on a short-term basis.
  2. Networking and professional development – to bring artists together and encourage the exchange of advice, support and help for 3D artists.
  3. Marketing – to improve and support the marketing of 3D art, including the provision of some exhibition space (indoor and outdoor) attached to the project.
  4. Education and participation – to provide a bespoke venue to run courses for schools, groups and visitors presented by practising artist members.
  5. Consultancy and project management – a specialist consultancy, project management and advice service for agencies, authorities, developers and individuals commissioning public art.
